You have to read books 1 and 2 before you read this one because its the third book of a trilogy and as in all such cases there are threads in the story which were be unexplained if you haven't. That said it is another side of Salkeld, totally different to the Kendal based novels, but just as readable and gripping. The "heroine" is a hard case with a soft centre and one that supports her staff while fighting the hierarchy. Week worth the read but don't forget to read the first two books first.Product details

I have really enjoyed all the books by this author. This wasn't my favorite, but don't skip it because these novellas are definitely a series and not stand alone stories.
i would have liked this series more if the main character did not spend so much time worrying/complaining about her responsibilities and childcare worries. The plot is not bad, but the angst is a drag on the pacing of the story and just does not make me want to know this policewoman
Well written story with complex characters revealing new elements as the series progresses. Worth trying if you like police versus criminal tension.
Very good read
J.J. Salked adds gritty to nitty-gritty. His characters are three dimension, fleshed out, living beings. Each one has a story and the way they are portrayed encourages readers to pay attention. Looking forward to the follow up of this novel. It stopped so abruptly, I thought I had missed something.
Have read all these and wish there were more. The editing, or lack there of, is a little distracting. Spell check gets you part of the way, but doesn't get you the right word. Like the characters in this series as well as the Lakeland murder series.
J.J. Salkeld has me hooked. The strength of the characters in these books, flawed as they may be, makes me care what happens to Pepper and her colleagues. The deft way that the under-resourcing of the "thin blue line" is projected makes it seem real and scary, not just some polemic. The touches of humor and humanity liven up these books. And those criminals. The local boy made bad, Dai, is a real piece of work. I hope that this series continues on and one.
